Homemade Sour Cream

Sour Cream is among the simplest condiments to prepare.

To create homemade sour cream, mix 1 cup of heavy whipping cream with 1 teaspoon of white vinegar in a glass jar. Cover the top with a breathable paper towel secured by a rubber band and allow it to sit at room temperature for 24 hours.

Ingredients and Tools

  • 1 cup of heavy whipping cream

  • 2 teaspoons white vinegar

  • Glass jar (such as a Mason jar)

  • Paper towel and a rubber band

Step-by-Step Instructions

  • Pour the heavy cream into your clean glass jar.

  • Stir in the white vinegar with the heavy cream

  • Cover the jar tightly with the lid and shake it well for about one minute to mix the ingredients.

  • Take off the lid, cover the with a breathable paper towel and fasten it securely with a rubber band.

  • Let the jar sit undisturbed on your kitchen counter at room temperature for 24 hours.

  • After 24 hours, check your jar, you should have a slight separation in cream when a clear or yellowish liquid (whey) accumulates at the top or bottom—is perfectly normal during the culturing or chilling stages. You can easily mix the liquid back in for a smoother consistency, or drain it if you prefer a thicke stir the mixture thoroughly, replace the lid on the jar, and move it to the refrigerator to chill and set further before serving
